Nuthinking 06 first public blog test

Hi guys, as posted in my old blog, I’m here to ask for any feedback about this new blog. As you can see the graphic is quite simple, so I would prefer that comments will be more about factors like:

  • understanding of data
  • semplicity on using it
  • support on finding data

The first aim of this blog, in fact, is to help users to find what they may look for, so please let me know if it helps on that (please consider that this is a blog and so for portfolio and stuff it could be necessary to browse the future main site, but I’m still thinking about it).

Many thanks!

Update: Thanks to a bug in the beginBitmapFill on IE crashes, in the IDE as well, this mean that I will have to change rollover effects in the tags, at the moment I will disable the texture.

  1. Christian,

as usual you’re one step ahead: your new site introduce quite interesting interaction ideas; I’d also low the way you’re mashing up all the related info such as Flickr and delicious (I had tough times looking for such a templates for my Wordpress based blog and finally found Squible beta as a wonderful template set); congratulations apart I’d like to share with you my thought on what is not working so well.

Blog section: too visually overwhelming; the variable title background length makes the page scanning quite crappy; I’d extend the black background to the whole line as in the text below or get rid of it completely. I’d also separate a little bit more from the post text the “courtesy” section (posted date + tags)

search: I would’nt show tags suggestion when the user clicks on the search field, but only after she started typing. BTW let me say that the “auto” scrolling feature and the enlarging scroll bar are excellent!

  2. Hi Matteo, first of all thanks for your time! About the fact the it is too overwhelming I don’t agree, especially considering that the two applets, if the user doesn’t interact with them, hide themselves. About the length of the “tag selection” line probably it doesn’t help so much that it is variable, but it related the fact the the blog is wider and why not to keep the search closer if possible? :)
About the curtesy section I think you are right.
About the search the issue probably you are right, but that my could be a way to show the most popular search regardless what the user is looking for :) Unfortunately I can’t count on a fast server like Google, I will try to optimize the size of data to avoid this huge wait between suggestions.

    Thanks again, chr

  3. wow, this is one spiffy blog!

The recent entries side panel is really well done. I also liked the drill down tag picker at the top but found it confusing for the first few minutes.

It would probably help to not have the ’sort by’ parameters covered by the tag menus that pop up. (Maybe move to them the bottom of the top section?) The only way I could consistently get the sort/date filters was to sneakily move the mouse sideways.

I was also confused by what the pink and blue dots referred to next to a title. (I kept on thinking it was a link to flickr.) After another few minutes, I realized that it was an indicator of comments and views…. Could you fit numbers in here instead?

  4. Hi pearl, I agree about the “sort by” sideway hassle, but I wouldn’t put it so far from the tags selection, in that case it could be understood like a filter for the results. By the way I’ll think about it.
About the understanding of the colored dots I have to decide how much to help first time users and how much old users. For the lattest, for instance, maybe it would be better not to have so much text around, and consider that those numbers can get to 4 figures, for instance the popularity of a del.icio.us link, they couldn’t fit so easily. An option could be a kind of info panel shown the first time. Thanks for your time, chr

*** update: I just remove the delay in the closing of the first TagSelector, probably it’s already something to speed up the “sort by” access.

  5. Wow. I never saw the old blog, but this new one is VERY impressive! Good stuff!

  6. Hi Jason, thanks for the positive feedback. The old website/blog is visible here: http://nuthinking.com/v1/

  7. Hy Christian. that’s a clear example of how a web designer may differentiates itself from those ASA (arms stolen from agriculture) that massively populate the web.
    bye…
    Alberto

  8. Very good blog, thank you.

  9. Hello Christian,
i think this blog is the best attempt to merge high quality interaction with web 2.0 features: a point of contact “Flash” and “web 2.0″ cultures. Unique.
